A spokesman for Major League Baseball side Boston Red Sox confirmed his death on Wednesday night, the Globe says. The Red Sox were the last team in the major leagues to field a black player. He played for four seasons with the Red Sox and one with the New York Mets from 1959-63, batting .246 with 13 homers and 74 RBIs. The Red Sox invited Green back to Fenway Park in 2009 to commemorate 50 years since he broke the colour barrier. Green was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame last year.
