El Paso TimesThe El Paso City Council on Monday extended the local emergency ordinance that protects tenants from being evicted during the coronavirus crisis, although the state's highest civil court has allowed eviction hearings to resume. First issued in March, the local ordinance has been extended four times and was set to expire June 10. When East-Central city Rep. Cassandra Hernandez asked City Attorney Karla Nieman whether the city's emergency ordinance has "any teeth" given the state court ruling, Nieman said it allows the city to fine landlords $500 if they violate the ordinance.
