Egyptian irrigation ministry reveals lengths of canals lined within Decent Life initiative

CAIRO – 4 August 2024: The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources indicated in a statement Sunday that 3,280 kilometers of canals had been lined and that work had been underway along 720 kilometers within the first phase of Decent Life initiative. The lining is not exclusive to the rural villages included in the initiative. In February 2023, the ministry revealed in a press statement that the total length of canals lined had amounted to 6,648 kilometers, and that tenders would be invited soon for lining 1,664 others. A report - released in June to showcase the achievements of the government between 2018 and 2024 – included an announcement about launching the second phase of Decent Life Initiative in July, which will be implemented with funds worth LE450 billion and completed in three years. The Egyptian Center for Strategic Studies (ECSS) issued in July a report titled "The Villages of Egypt in 10 Years: From Marginalization to Decent Life" which is the initiative aimed at developing the countryside and improving the lives of 58 million with a budget that surpasses LE1 trillion.
