Egbin, nine other power plants suffer gas shortage

’Femi AsuThe nation’s biggest power plant, Egbin, and nine other plants have seen their output drop on the back of gas shortage, with generation dropping below 3,000 megawatts. Total power generation in the country stood at 2,995.2MW as of 6am on Friday, from 3,613.3MW the previous day, according to the Nigerian Electricity System Operator. Gas producers in the country have continued to lament the debts owed them by power generation companies for the gas supplied to them. According to Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the financial viability of the Nigerian electricity supply industry is still a major challenge threatening its sustainability. The nation generates most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total generation.
