EDMONTON — Gary Allen smiled ear-to-ear after getting his hair cut at Homeless Connect on Sunday, hopeful it would not only change his appearance but the way others treat him. “They make you feel like a person again,” said Allen, one of around 1,500 people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty expected to come through the 20th Homeless Connect event at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton on Sunday. In the first few hours of Homeless Connect, volunteer dentists and hygienists had already treated nearly 100 patients. “They get painted with a brush that I feel is wrong … that’s what society does to some of them; tars them with a stigma they don’t deserve.” Lena Ciunyk has had her teeth cleaned and repaired at Homeless Connect for years.
