Double Olympian cyclist Eddie Dawkins is calling for accountability from Cycling New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand following the suspected suicide of his friend Olivia Podmore. Dawkins, who retired from the sport last year on his “own terms”, is “devastated” by the news of Podmore’s death. He’s calling for accountability and action from the governing bodies - Cycling New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand. “Within the performance enhancement grant that all New Zealand High Performance athletes get it's based on your performances. High Performance Sport New Zealand chief executive Raelene Castle said Monday night was the hardest of her career following the news of Podmore’s death.
