Tararua is looking to lessons learned during the pandemic as it develops a plan to ensure everyone in the district has access to food. The Tararua District Council has received $30,000 for the next two years from the government’s Food Secure Communities fund to research the capabilities of its foodbanks and support organisations. It will enable the council to draft a food security plan that will allow groups to work together more efficiently. Food Secure Communities Tararua working group co-ordinator Emma Elliot said the response to the pandemic and last year's lockdown proved organisations did good work and people rallied to help in times of need. Worboys said it was a similar story in other towns, and the working group did not need to tinker much as it expanded on that.
