A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday near the coast of Taiwan, killing two people and injuring more than 200 others, officials said. Rescue workers search through rubble outside the Marshal Hotel in Hualien, eastern Taiwan, early Tuesday, after a strong earthquake struck the island. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck 21 kilometres north-northeast of Hualien, Taiwan, at a depth of 9.5 kilometres. The quake came exactly two years after a 6.4 magnitude quake struck southern Taiwan, causing the collapse of an apartment complex and the deaths of at least 115 people. A 7.6 magnitude quake in central Taiwan killed more than 2,300 people in 1999.
