Earthquake hits off the coast of SouthlandSUPPLIED A magnitude 5.8 quake struck near Southland. Parts of Southland might have felt a slight rumble as 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast on Wednesday afternoon. The quake hit at a depth of 33km and 585km south-west of Invercargill. GeoNet initially had the quake as measuring 4.8M, causing moderate shaking, but after a review said "the quake would not be widely felt". The quake was originally measured as being 12km deep and 40km south-west of Invercargill.
