The European Union delivered an ultimatum to Britain on Thursday, demanding it withdraw a proposal before British lawmakers that would breach the Brexit divorce agreement the two sides signed late last year. The proposed law would give the British government power to override some of the most sensitive parts of the agreement that were aimed at avoiding the emergence of a hard border between the British province of Northern Ireland and Ireland, an EU member. This was done to avoid inflaming sectarian tensions on the island.
