Texas Tech had more than 600 active coronavirus cases on Wednesday; in a statement, President Lawrence Schovanec blamed the surge in cases on “parties and other social gatherings that are taking place off campus” in violation of the university’s coronavirus protocols. However, universities are still experiencing major outbreaks, many sourced to off-campus parties. Some, like the Chapel Hill campus at the University of North Carolina, have already sent students home after cancelling in-person classes and switching to remote learning.
