More than 30 Kenyan-born runners are competing for other nations, especially at the Rio Olympics. Most of these athletes have been lured by oil rich countries like Turkey, Bahrain and Qatar with others seeking citizenship in the US. Already, two Kenyan born athletes have claimed medals for their adopted counties in Rio. Ruth Jebet won the women’s 3,000m steeplechase for Bahrain, its first ever victory at the Olympics with Eunice Kirwa adding up their tally with a silver in marathon. Perhaps the offer of scholarships to local schools and universities besides financial assistance will be the way to go.
