A mother-of-three hugged a stranger after he paid for her family's groceries at a Dunedin supermarket. Young explained the man had paid, and the woman "went over and gave him a huge big hug and said 'thanks'." Young said the man had given the family hope, and they wanted to live in a city where people like him were citizens. During that first shop several shoppers also said "welcome" to the family, including their children, seven, nine and 11. "The young mother was grinning ear to ear."
