Dumpling maker joins calls for tougher food labelling rules

Food producers aren’t backing down on calls for tougher food labelling rules, despite the Government putting planned changes on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak. Country of origin labelling is voluntary in New Zealand, meaning Kiwis could be unwittingly consuming large quantities of imported food. supplied Dumpling maker Vicky Ha says a clearer food labelling system would give Kiwi businesses a welcome boost after lockdown. In 2005, a joint standard on mandatory country of origin labelling was proposed by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand. But New Zealand broke ranks, rejecting the rules, while Australia elected to enforce origin labelling.
