An evacuation order was lifted on Wednesday evening after a live explosive device was reported in an area of downtown Sydney, N.S., earlier in the day. "The explosive device was safely disposed of by the military's explosive disposal unit. Evacuations have been lifted and the area has reopened to public access," Cape Breton Regional Police said in a news release sent at 6:20 p.m. AT. Darren Barrington, police were called to 153 Pitt St. at around 7:30 a.m. after a live grenade was found inside a business. “When the police arrived on site, they entered the building and they found what appeared to be an explosive device sitting on the floor,” Barrington said in an interview with CBC Radio’s Mainstreet Cape Breton.
