Don’t conduct kangaroo court at police stations, Commissioner tells staff

more-inTaking an exception to police stations becoming mediation centres, City Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar warned the police to stop conducting kangaroo courts and focus on crime detection and maintaining law and order. In a circular issued to city police on April 7, the Commissioner said it had come to his notice that many police officials were resolving crimes at stations without bringing them to the notice of the courts. He said it is the duty of the police to report the matter to the court to ensure free and fair trial. The circular was issued following a representation from the High Court Advocates’ Association accusing the police of not cooperating with advocates and of misbehaving with them whenever they visit stations to inquire about cases they are dealing with. He also pulled up constables who perform court duties to wear uniforms compulsorily while attending court proceedings.
