He’s right in there with Robert Downey’s Jr. clanking egotist in Iron Man and Ryan Reynold’s smirking vigilante in Deadpool. This is no small achievement for a character that has been long been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but not an easy fit for a blockbuster franchise. Doctor Strange goes big on mystical palaver — there’s a lot of talk about God, the universe and everything — and some of the characters recall the creakiest of Hollywood stereotypes. Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange is a cocky genius of a New York neurosurgeon, who quizzes his nurses with pop-song trivia while in the midst of innovative brain surgeries he nimbly undertakes. It’s here that Doctor Strange starts to become a reflection of so many other Marvel movies.
