DoLE supports safeguard duty on imported cars – The Manila Times

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) has thrown its support behind the imposition of a provisional safeguard duty on imported passenger cars and light commercial vehicles to protect workers in the domestic automotive manufacturing industry. “This is a significant measure to protect workers and improve the labor market condition in the industry battered not just by the pandemic, but also the influx of imported vehicles,” Bello said in a statement. As a labor-intensive industry, he said, the potential for employment opportunities in the industry is significant. The imposition of the provisional safeguard duty was based on the petition for safeguard measures filed by the Philippine Metalworkers Alliance. But massive importation over the years, he said, has jeopardized the intention of the CARS Law.
