The Great Before is where the spirit of Joe meets 22 (Tina Fey) — a soul he must mentor and prepare for life on earth. The New York scenes are flavored with the jazz compositions and arrangements of the brilliant Jon Batiste. I associate the work of these two with many of David Fincher’s recent films, yet here they are doing Pixar. Soul makes us ponder life, our passions, our every days and death, and uses jazz and a jazz musician as vehicles for telling the story. Can we ever look at drawing our next breath or feeling the sunlight on our faces the same way again?
