Discovery says its target market in South Africa was hit much harder by the second wave of Covid-19 infections. Spike in claims during the holiday periodsThe insurance group said Discovery Life recorded a "material increase" in Covid-19 claims particularly in December. It paid out net identified Covid-19 claims of approximately R400 million in December which represented about 34% of the business' Covid-19 claims provision established in June 2020. In the results presentation on Thursday morning, Discovery CEO, Adrian Gore said the group has registered 5711 deaths across Discovery Health, Discovery Life and VitalityLife. Gore said days after post-matric celebratory events and during the holiday period, Discovery would record massive spikes in infections among its clients.
