The death of a 23-year-old cyclist on a downtown Ottawa street Thursday morning has re-ignited the debate about bike safety in this city. Nusrat Jahan was struck by a truck while riding her bicycle near the busy intersection of Lyon Street and Laurier Avenue. It appeared the truck and the bike were both travelling eastbound when the cyclist was “right-hooked,” or struck, as the truck turned right onto Lyon and she proceeded east on Laurier. RelatedThe bike lanes on Laurier Avenue are part of an east-west bikeway through the downtown core. In the wake of the morning’s fatal crash, a crowd gathered at Ottawa City Hall at noon to call for more measures to promote bike safety.
