68 year old Dilma Rousseff has been ousted from power as the President of Brazil and has promptly been replaced by Michel Temer, the former Vice President. Rousseff’s impeachment came with a soft landing as the motion to bar her from holding any public office for the next eight years failed. However, with a new leader, political crises may still be far from over in Brazil. People have also argued that Rousseff is just another unfortunate victim of the hostility of the country’s political class to democracy. However, a ‘new era’ in Brazil remains debatable, and the political quagmire in the country may be far from over since Rousseff has vowed to challenge her impeachment.
