Dick Assman of Letterman fame dies at 82

Dick Assman, the Saskatchewan gas station attendant who rose to fame in the 1990s when he was discovered by David Letterman, has died at 82. Assman died peacefully on Monday in Regina, according to his obituary. He worked as a gas station manager, mechanic and attendant for his entire adult life, but gained sudden notoriety in July 1995 when Letterman discovered an advertisement he and his business partner had placed in a local Regina newspaper to announce their relocation. Letterman featured the ad on The Late Show, accompanied by a song about Assman’s name sung by Tony Orlando. “I know that it’s not fair to make fun of somebody’s name, but good heavens,” Letterman said during the initial segment.
