The protest began around 5pm Tuesday, just three hours after the High Court has turned down a writ petition seeking its directive to defer the elections to the two Dhaka city corporations as it coincides with the Saraswati Puja of the Hindu community. “The general students from Dhaka university blockade Shahbagh intersection demanding rescheduling of the upcoming both city polls,” Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasan told Dhaka Tribune while confirming the matter. On December 22 last year, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for the polls to DNCC and DSCC fixing January 30 as the voting date.
