Three debut authors are among the final five nominees for the 2020 Toronto Book Award, worth $10,000 to the winner, the city announced Monday morning. “I wanted something that was specifically Canadian, specifically Toronto, specifically Jamaican and other islands,” she told the Star in an interview when the book came out. Established by city council in 1974, the awards honour books of literary merit that are evocative of Toronto. This year’s Toronto Book Awards volunteer committee includes writer and poet Kate Cayley, poet Michael Fraser, poet Liz Howard, bookseller Ben McNally and author Naben Ruthnum. The winner of the 2020 awards will be announced in a ceremony livestreamed from the Toronto Reference Library on Nov. 30.
