That suggestion prompted moral outrage from the prime minister and others who claimed that it would violate the rule of law. What have our foreign minister and prime minister done with their Chinese counterparts to bridge the impasse? The government is being urged by many Canadians to take tougher action on China over its “national security” clampdown on Hong Kong. The track record of Hong Kong immigrants to Canada amply demonstrates that this would be more than a humanitarian gesture. Why not as well impose our own version of the Magnitsky sanctions on Chinese officials who are complicit in the Hong Kong crackdown?
