Nearly 25 per cent more people were on the search for property in 2020 than there were in 2019, data from Realestate.co.nz reveals. The surge in demand was evident in every region in 2020, with the most significant increases seen in the South Island. Oliver Weber/NZ House & Garden Marlborough saw a big surge of demand in 2020 – and the country’s biggest decline in listings. “Overall, what we’ve seen quite clearly throughout 2020 is demand for property outweighing supply, which could have contributed to price increases.”Average asking prices were up year-on-year in every region in 2020, as well as nationally. Gisborne region saw the largest price increase, with its average asking price up by 21.8 per cent year-on-year to $526,948.
