The Cabinet on Monday cleared the proposal to hike the allowances, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam told reporters on Monday. There had been no discussion of increasing the allowances to other Freedom Fighters, said the cabinet secretary. The revised allowances will be implemented with retrospective effect from January this year, he said. The four categories of award were named Birsreshtho, Bir Uttam, Bir Bikram and Bir Protik after the war. Seven people were awarded Bir Sreshtho, 68 Bir Uttam, 175 Bir Bikram and 426 Bir Pratik.
