Kabir was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers in 1983. In his career, he served as instructor at the Engineer Center & School of Military Engineering and the School of Infantry & Tactics. He commanded 10 Riverine Engineer Battalion and 98 Composite Brigade at the Bangabandhu Bridge. He also served as the Commandant of Bangladesh Ordnance Factories and Bangladesh Tea Board chairman. Kabir graduated from Bangladesh Military Academy under Chittagong University and completed his BSc in Civil Engineering from BUET.
