Adeze OjukwuSince Friday, the debate over aspartame’s cancer risks has been raging. World Health Organization(WHO) cancer research agency, has officially, classified the commonly used artificial sweetener aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”However, a different United Nations(UN) agency, however, gave another verdict. “IARC classified aspartame as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) on the basis of limited evidence for cancer in humans (specifically, for hepatocellular carcinoma, which is a type of liver cancer),” a joint press release noted. For them, survival was of more importance than dwelling on cancer risks. Therefore, more research needs to be done to ascertain the real facts about aspartame’s cancer risks.
