The government has been rushing to get its proposed law, Bill C-14, passed by then. It says not having a law would eliminate important safeguards, and let virtually anyone ask their doctor to help them die. But they would need special permission to table such a resolution, which aims to open up the law by dropping eligibility requirements. Others, however, have said that won’t be the case, and are calling for a fulsome debate. And it calls for an independent commission to explore the question of allowing advance directives even before a diagnosis is made.
