At least 94 people died in Toronto last year as a result of issues tied to homelessness, Toronto Public Health says. There was no comprehensive system to monitor the number of people who died for reasons tied to homelessness, a Star investigation revealed in 2016. Those reasons include any combination of addiction, mental health, chronic health conditions, poverty, exposure to the elements, violence and general neglect. One young man who died of a suspected overdose in Toronto in 2017 was Pierre Gregoire, a member of the Innu Nation. Sarah Ovens, with the Toronto Overdose Prevention Society, said while addiction is not more prevalent among any socioeconomic group, people without housing are uniquely vulnerable to overdosing.
