"We arrived on the scene and found eight people dead in the back of that trailer," San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said. Police used a helicopter after dawn Sunday to search nearby woods and residential neighborhoods for further people in medical distress, the San Antonio Express-News reported. In three previous incidents this month in the San Antonio area, federal agents found 72 people, 33 people and 16 people from Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala and El Salvador inside locked trailers, the San Antonio Express-News reported. On Sunday evening Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement on what he described as an "apparent human trafficking operation." "Human trafficking is an epidemic that Texas is working to eradicate," he said, adding that he planned to use the "full weight of the law" against the perpetrators of this "despicable crime."
