Death in Bhangar clash, police vehicles attacked

Picture by Pradip Sanyal Bhangar (South 24-Parganas), Jan. 17: One person died today in a clash between police and villagers protesting land acquisition for a power substation in Bhangar. Residents of Bhangar, 40km from Calcutta, said farmer Mofizul Khan, 32, was killed in police firing. Police sources said "Maoist sympathisers" had instigated the villagers and also told them that overhead power cables would pose health hazards. The Bhangar agitators dispersed this evening after they learnt that the government could relocate the project. A senior police officer said around 10,000 protesters today hurled bombs at cops, clashed with them, set at least three police vehicles on fire, pushed four more into ponds and blocked roads.
