Dealer brings Gully painting back to NZ


Rupert Souch of Soucheby's Antiques with the recently-acquired 1887 watercolour of Lake Manapouri by Nelson artist John Gully. An original painting by the New Zealand artist John Gully has returned to Nelson after being found in a private Australian collection. In 2010, a Gully painting Head of Lake Wakatipu sold for $79,000 at Hamilton's Aesthete Gallery auction. Martin de Ruyter Nelson's Suter Art Gallery holds the country's largest collection of Gully paintings with 47 of his paintings in its collection. Some sources suggest John Gully painted between 700 and 900 paintings in his lifetime.
