David France’s How to Survive a Plague: Review

The epoch is a clearly defined one — 1981-1996 — one that, for most sexually active people during those years, meant only one thing: AIDS. This is not a book about the global AIDS crisis. Haitians suffered early and greatly, their immigrant and outsider status intensified by being seen as carriers. The fact that this is a story of white men is not, however, the product of the same leukophilia that drives most of North American and European cultural production. There are plenty of acutely drawn story arcs involving unlikely characters, such as prostitute Richard Berkowitz or teenagers Spencer Cox and the brilliant Garance Franke-Rute.
