Was Dark Phoenix the X-Men movie no one wanted? Endgame did bring the current chapter to a close, but the property is too valuable not to continue in some form. Meanwhile, X-Men was also winding down, with Dark Phoenix bringing down the curtain on the story of Prof. Xavier (James McAvoy) and his merry band of mutants. Far from saving the world, Dark Phoenix often just satisfies itself with issues of guilt, responsibility, and the nagging feeling that things done with the best of intentions can still result in the worst of consequences for all involved. And in hindsight, it might have been better to let the superb 2017 quasi-western Logan make the final stand for the X-Men universe.
