Athol and Garston chief fire officer Rob Durling is responsible for one of the district’s most dangerous stretches of road on State Highway 6. His volunteer firefighters are often the first on the scene at crashes in the Kingston area, on what he calls “a nasty bit of road”. Police figures show Queenstown cops received 3038 calls about bad driving behaviour last year, up 14 percent on the 2642 calls in 2016. But that doesn’t mean dangerous driving has been reduced, he says.
