Damaged Ta Kwai temple ‘at risk of collapse’

The ceremony took place on Monday at the Ta Kwai temple ruins in Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin province. (Photo: 22nd Infantry Battalion, Task Force 2)Experts say parts of the Ta Kwai temple, which sustained heavy damage during the recent Thai-Cambodian military conflict, are at risk of collapse, prompting authorities to bar public access due to safety concerns and uncleared landmines. “There are still a very large number of landmines in the area, both around the Ta Kwai temple and Hill 350,” Lt Col Sarayut said on Tuesday at the temple site in Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin. The Ta Kwai temple dates back to some time between the 11th to 13th centuries, built in the Khmer style during the Angkorian period. Thai forces have deployed units along a stretch of about four kilometres, he added.
