The boat racing competition takes place from the ninth to the eleventh day of the third lunar month in Tay Tuu ward, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi. Before taking part in the competition, rowers offer incense at the communal house and wash their hands. The race covers 2,000m on Thuy Giang River and attracts the participation of 150 rowers in six boats. Each boat has 25 rowers, including one person who steers the boat, and one who bails out the water.
