Dahi Handi: HC won't limit dahi handi revelry, says accidents can happen even in toilet


"If we enter into that arena, we would be encroaching on the domain of the legislature," said a bench of Justice Bhushan Gavai and Justice Makarand Karnik. "Is it for us to take care of all situations under (article) 226? Accidents can happen even in a toilet," remarked Justice Gavai.The court heard two public interest litigations expressing concern about the safety of children who participate in the human pyramids. On August 11, 2014 the high court had directed the state government to raise the minimum age of participants to 18 years and to cap the height of human pyramid to 20 feet or four layers. The judges also took note that the government has assured the Supreme Court that it will ensure proper safety is provided and remedial measures taken as directed in the high court's 2014 order.
