This week, the headmaster of a top British public school banned sixth-form pupils from entering into relationships. Toby Belfield, of Ruthin School, a co-educational boarding school in north Wales, claimed that “most teenage romances negatively affect academic outcomes”. Most believed that it would be ludicrous to try to stop teenage romance, but it’s undeniable that teenage dating does prove a testing time for parents. I have five children (a boy and four girls), now aged between 14 and 21, and vividly recall the early signs that my teenage children were embarking on their first relationships. The fug of Lynx Africa in the bathroom left behind by my 15-year-old son.
