THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is studying the application for safeguard measures on imported automobiles, an official said over the weekend. “The DTI through the Bureau of Import Services (BIS) is currently assessing the application for safeguard duty on imported automobiles filed by the Philippine Metal Workers Alliance (PMA),” Trade Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo said in an interview. PMA is a labor group registered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE). Rodolfo said this is the first time in the Philippines that a labor group filed for an application of a safeguard measure. Safeguard [duty] is supposed to be for industries that have a surge [of imports].
