PUTRAJAYA: The task force on tahfiz will recommend an amendment to the Education Act 1996 (Act 550) to allow the registration of private religious schools including tahfiz, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the Act currently does not define schools that teach solely religious subjects as private schools, and as such, many tahfiz (religious schools) are not registered with the authorities. Dr Ahmad Zahid said that this would be one of several recommendations to Cabinet to resolve safety issues in such schools. The task force was set up to probe the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz fire. Out of the 941 schools, 612 are registered with state authorities while the rest are members of the Persatuan Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Quran Malaysia
