The steady growth in revenue from Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the last couple of months is indeed good news as the government attempts all possible ways to beef up revenues. For, the growth indicates that the tax base is expanding gradually with measures such as e-way bills and effective data mining helping the GST regime stabilise. According to the finance ministry, as many as 72.13 lakh summary return GSTR 3B were filed for the month of March, up to April 30. Out of the gross GST collection of ?1.13 lakh crore in April, Central GST (CGST) stood at Rs 21,163 crore, State GST (SGST), Rs 28,801 crore, and Integrated GST (GST), at Rs 54,733 crore. Going forward, though the government may want to get the collections stabilise around this monthly figure and hopes that average monthly collection for 2019-20 is at least 10% higher than the previous fiscal, it may be an unrealistic target.
