The Maharashtra government's rehabilitation package for owners and drivers of Mumbai's iconic horse-drawn Victoria carts may be too meagre. Horse cart owners and drivers lament that they need more generous compensation as they have little skills for white-collar occupations to feed their families. The plan covers just Victoria owners and drivers and not others who make up the larger system like those who bathe and feed the horses or shoe them. Animal rights activists and NGOs who are vocal over the maltreatment of these horses must also contribute to this effort to resettle these Victoria operators. This will also dispel the perception that animal rights activism is largely an elitist activity which is often at odds with the interests of the poor and common people.
