DMP: No rallies, meetings allowed on February 8

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has put a ban on carrying sticks, batons, knives or any sharp weapons, and explosive or flammable substances in the Dhaka metropolitan area on Thursday, the day of verdict delivery in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, in which BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is one of the accused. In a statement issued on Tuesday, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah further said rallies and meetings would not be allowed on the streets of Dhaka on the day either. “In order to uphold peace and ensure the safety of the people, under Sections 28 and 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, carrying all kinds of batons, rods, knives, sharp weapons, and explosive or flammable substances is banned until further notice. Holding rallies and meetings that impede or disrupt the normal passage of the public is also not allowed,” he added. The DMP chief said he hoped to have everyone’s assistance and support in maintaining the peace in the capital city.
