COLOMBO (News 1st): The rate of DELTA infections detected in the country has risen with cases reported from over 15 areas in the Western Province and across seven other districts. The DELTA infections were confirmed from Colombo, Angoda, Kaduwela, Nugegoda, Mount Lavinia, Boralesgamuwa, Maharagama, Piliyandala, Kahathuduwa, Kesbewa, Bandaragama, Panadura, Kalutara, Biyagama, Kadawatha, and Ragama, the University of Sri Jayawardenapura said on Saturday (Aug. 07). Samples obtained from 94 COVID infected patients were subjected to genome sequencing and accordingly, 56 of those were confirmed to have contracted the DELTA variant, Dr. Chandima Jeevandara, the Head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura told News 1st. According to the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, patients infected with the DELTA variant were also detected from the districts of Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Ampara, Vavuniya, and Jaffna.
