Much of the hate of cycleways can be blamed on extra stress that new bike lanes put on vehicle drivers, says sociologist and cycleway researcher Dr Kirsty Wild. Wild said at the heart of what often seemed over-the-top anger against bike lanes was inability to handle change in and around roads. "Bikelash is particularly confusing because if you ask people if they want bike lanes they tend to say 'yes' very enthusiastically. Wilds said New York had an "absolute intense bikelash" when it put in bike lanes.
