A 49-year-old man has been detained for questioning as of today for stealing details and chips of credit cards from envelopes as well as making HK$320,000 transactions using fake debit cards with the chips he stole. He was taken to his apartment later on the same day, during which 28 chips of debit cards, items with losses reported -- including three ID cards, several debit cards, membership cards and student cards, were seized there. Sau Mau Ping division chief inspector Ma Ling-ho said police had received 14 reports about credit cards having been used by the third-party for cash advances on multiple occasions, despite the credit cards were not stolen. Poon said that the man removed chips from the credit cards stolen and embedded them into the fake debit cards. “He then embedded fake chips into the credit cards and put the cards back into the letterboxes with the envelopes,” Poon said.
